Workshops will start with a 30-minute live demonstration by the instructor.

In this intensive class, students learn how to paint the realistic human figure using traditional techniques of the Old Masters, as well as contemporary techniques in paint application. The live model will hold one sustained pose for the entire evening, allowing for greater focus on the subtle nuances of form, light and skin tones. Emphasis will be placed upon paint application (thin-to-thick, dark-to-light, dull-to-bright), as well as utilizing the classical techniques of underpainting, grisaille, overpainting, and impasto. And for those whom are up for it, we’ll explore a range of contemporary painting techniques (artificial colour, squeegee application, removal and scraping techniques, silhouettes, flats, negative space, dramatic compositions, etc.), bringing a new life into your paintings. To kick-start the evening, instructor Ogilvie will give a 30-minute live demonstration on how to paint the portrait, illustrating key techniques. This class is further supplemented with individual and group feedback, as well as discussions on both historical and contemporary figurative painting. At the class’s end, you’ll have experienced a heightened sense of creativity, momentum and productivity setting the stage for new inspiration and tangible breakthroughs in your own painting practice.
