Message from the President

How are you doing? So glad that, with proper care, many places are re-opening and we are able to resume a bit of a normal life again. I think it's now standard for everyone to have hand sanitizer and a couple masks in their cars and thank goodness most cars have that handy compartment between their seats to hold all this. Like all things, we are getting used to the new norm and hopefully we can see our group meeting inside again come September. I guess our 2020 budget will need to be altered to include a few big bottles of hand sanitizer!!

It was so nice to see so many members come out to the book launch Monday, June 22nd. We did it right by encouraging people to stay 6' apart. I am not sure how many members actually went into the park to enjoy their book but many of you stayed around in the parking lot to just stand and chat and get caught up with everyone's news.

The first run of just over 300 books is pretty well sold out! The Bearclaw Gallery owner, Jackie, was one of the judges and she had asked for 6 for stock in her gallery so we are now actual wholesalers! Kim, the owner of The Paint Spot has also asked to carry our book and she told me that all proceeds from their sales will go towards the Whyte Avenue ArtWalk Festival. Artists Helping Artists! We have to wait until the second run is complete though, before we can get them to her.

Here's a question for our membership. Does anyone personally know of any purchasing agents from any of the main banks or large institutes that like to give gifts to visiting dignitaries, etc.? We feel that this book would be perfect for them. Please let me know!

See below for more news about our next book project, a planned Plein air paint-out, a Café Blackbird exhibition, and more!

I hope you have a wonderful summer. Stay healthy and safe and we will hopefully be able to meet again in September.

Eveline Garneau, SWCA President

Summer Program

Plein air Summer Outing

Member Cynthia Clark, has offered her beautiful acreage as a plein air painting spot. As she told us at the book launch "With all this extra time, the amount of gardening that I have been doing lately, my gardens have never looked better!”

Date and Time: Saturday, August 15th 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Location: East of Sherwood Park near Hastings Lake

If you would like to come, please email Cynthia with your RSVP and she will provide you with directions and any additional instructions.

Please bring your own chair, bag lunch, drinks, and of course, your art supplies.

If anyone else would like to host a day of painting, please contact Eveline and we'll arrange an email blast out to the members.

Book Committee News

Looking for inspiration for your painting, then here is the subject (and possible title) of our second book we are planning: Special Spots of Alberta. This book will include new images of Edmonton, plus Calgary, small town main streets, giant perogies or any of the other giant tourist spots, farmer's fields, lakes and, of course, our mountains.

So when you head out for a drive/staycation this summer, take along your camera and think about capturing those special spots Albertans love so you can use the photos as reference for painting when it gets colder.

If you already have completed paintings for this book, then send a high resolution image to swcabook@gmail.com. Also include name, title, size, medium and a one paragraph blurb about the subject (history, inspiration, etc.)

Café Blackbird Exhibition

Show runs from June 27 until August 2.
Located at 9640 - 142 Street, Edmonton

Café Blackbird is an attractive restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Sit back, maybe with friends, and enjoy SWCA’s beautiful art.

The Cafe Blackbird show set up went very well! Great work!

A sad announcement:

Thea Avis' husband, Jonathan, passed away suddenly in late June. He had just spent a wonderful weekend out at the farm with all his kids/grandkids for Father’s Day when his heart failed a few days later. Our deepest sympathies and thoughts go out to Thea.
