Message from the President

I had a fun adventure last week. I was hired to make a bunch of Remembrance Day banners for the Legion in St. Paul, Alberta and decided to deliver them myself. What a wonderful drive! I purposely took different routes there and back, so that I could see parts of Alberta I had never seen before. Seeing so many "Special Spots of Alberta" had me stopping quite a few times to take photos and what should have been 2 hours getting there, took me 3 hours and the same coming back! I truly enjoyed myself and I guess I have no excuses anymore and should get painting!

Last week, I saw through social media that artists were painting columns in a parkade! What an exciting project and why did I not know about it??? Did any of you? To see this project, visit The Louvre in Century Park in south Edmonton on November 6 & 13, 2504 - 110 Street NW, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

While the newsletter is primarily about SWCA news, our Member News section of the newsletter is meant as a place where our members can share art opportunities they come across. So please remember to send in any art project information or news that would be of interest to our members – be it from an art store, another art club, or a business. If you hear of something, let me know. If you are not sure of the details, let me know anyway, and I'll make contact and get all the information needed to share with the membership. We are a group whose motto is "Artists Helping Artists" and what better way to do that than to enlighten our members with fun art projects that they too can get involved in.

Our October Demo with Brian Buckrell was fast and fun. I was impressed with his lack of fear of trying things and his comments of "whoops, that's too blue" just made me smile. He was so willing to share some of his painting tips and I want to thank him for staying up late to inspire us!

Our next meeting will be a critique and I am hoping that all the artwork that came to our lovely outdoor September meeting can be part of what is shown at this critique. See below for more details.

Wishing you a snow-free November!

Eveline Garneau, SWCA President

Looking for Exhibition Opportunities

Have you seen a blank commercial wall? The Exhibitions committee is always looking for new venues to have shows. Please send in your suggestions and Jenna and her team will take it from there. Suggestions can be sent to swcameeting@gmail.com.

Standards Committee

Jury for Status

Enough advance applications were received to proceed with a Jury for Status in November. Official applications will be available soon on the website. Watch for a separate email announcement coming soon.

Volunteers

As you know, our Society is run by volunteers with a large variety of duties. We hope members see an area they are interested in, and then step up to volunteer to help our Society. Many of you have been volunteering already for quite a few years and studies show that people may suffer from volunteer burnout after 5 years. This is the case for some positions that now need some help. Please look these over and if one of them tweaks your interest, please contact Eveline at 780-489-1028. All positions can be taught to you, all you need is the desire to learn!

  • Newsletter Editor - duties include formatting the content of the newsletter within standardized templates and sending out the email to members. Commitment is once each month end, except for the summer months. Training is available.

  • Treasurer - Debbie is wanting to start training a replacement now so that when our March AGM happens, the new Treasurer can just confidently take over.

  • Social Media Editor - Duties include keeping our presence up on Facebook and Instagram

Book Committee

Special Spots in Alberta - Through the Eyes of Its Artists

Currently, we have approximately 130 entries sent in for the Alberta Book! That is wonderful! Keep up the great work and let's see if we can have the required 200 entries in before Christmas.

Have any interesting facts about Alberta? Send them in too! All entries must include a high resolution photo of your work, Title, Name of artist, medium, size and a one paragraph blurb about your piece. This can include your inspiration, something about the subject matter, some history, etc. Just a FYI - we need more images of our Alberta Cities and towns!
