Workshops will start with a 30-minute live demonstration by the instructor.

In this intensive class, students examine the underlying skeletal and muscular structures of the portrait in aim of creating powerful, dynamic and realistic drawings. Class begins with a brief lecture on proportion, facial features and key anatomical landmarks of the portrait, followed by drawing from the live model. The first hour consists of gestures and short poses, followed by a 1.5-hour long drawing. Students explore the expressive use of line, value, weight and volume as well as classical techniques of shading, gesture, sighting and composition. While working on mid-tone paper, students use their preferred drawing media, whether charcoal, conte, pastel, graphite, coloured pencil or ink. Emphasis will be placed upon observational accuracy, creating a likeness, as well as depicting key shapes and planes of the face. To kick-start the evening, instructor Ogilvie will give a 30-minute live demonstration on how to draw the portrait, illustrating key techniques. This class is further supplemented with individual and group feedback, as well as discussions on both historical and contemporary figurative drawing. At the evening’s end, you’ll have experienced a heightened sense of creativity, momentum and productivity setting the stage for new inspiration and tangible breakthroughs in your own drawing practice.
