Experience

Artist Biography
I studied painting and printmaking in the BFA program at U of A from 1991 to 1993. Previous to that I studied traditional Chinese calligraphy and brush painting with Master Guo in Taipei, Taiwan for 2 years.
Artist Statement
I am currently working on a series of expressive still life paintings in oil. In this series, I have
chosen to paint everyday objects or knick-knacks paired with flowers. My goal is to paint
loosely, with expressive brushwork and bold colour. These paintings have been so much fun
to paint and I am really happy how they are turning out. The comments I am getting are that
they are captivating and colourful images and that they make people happy. That makes me
happy. I really enjoy painting flowers as they allow me to experiment with composition,
drawing, colour and brushwork.
This series of expressive still life paintings in oil and pastel is called “A Burst of Colour, Floral
and Still life Paintings”. I start each piece with a loose sketch and a playful approach,
responding to how the image is developing and allowing it to take form intuitively. My goal is
to keep the painting fresh with a loose and immediate style. I really enjoy this way of working
as it allows me to experiment and try new things with each piece. In this new series I have
explored nuanced colour and light to convey the freshness of flowers and the simplicity of
everyday objects. It has been so much fun to paint and a joy to share them in the gallery.
